nov 1, 333 BC - Battle of Issus
Description:
Immortalized in the mosaic in the House of Faun in Pompeii, this battle was the first one where Alexander fought against King Darius III directly, routing the Persian king's army and forcing him to flee. The Battle of Issus, along with the earleir Battle of the Granicus River and the later battle of Gaugamela, were the most important conflicts in Alexander’s conquest of the Persian empire. Notably, in the aftermath of the battle, Alexander’s forces captured Darius’ family. The Macedonian king treated them with dignity and respect, ordering that they not be harmed.
