aug 18, 1920 - Nineteenth Amendment

Description:

The 19th amendment gave American women the right to vote. This was know as women's suffrage. In 1848, women such as: Elizabeth Stanton, and Lucretia Mott began demanding the right to vote. 70 years later and after many battles, they gained their right to vote. The amendment passed the House in a 304-89 vote and the Senate 56-25. Believe it or not, many southern states did not approve of the amendment, and they did not believe in women's suffrage. The last state to ratify the amendment was Tennessee, it was a 48-48 tie. Representative Harry Burn was the deciding vote, and it was ratified! That same year, 8 million women voted in an election for the first time.
