Description:
The 18th amendment was ratified on January 16th, and it took effect on January 17th of 1920. The 18th amendment banned the sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcohol. But, during this time period organized crime began to rise. The Volstead Act was passed in order to define the terms of the amendment. This time period was a time called Prohibition. Later, the 21st amendment would be passed to repeal the 18th amendment.
