mar 3, 1820 - Missouri Compromise
Description:
Date: March 3, 1820
In the years leading up to the Missouri Compromise, tensions began to rise between pro and anti-slavery groups within Congress and the U.S. Missouri's request for Union admission as a slave state in 1819 increased the tensions. While Congress agreed to Missouri's request, they admitted Maine as a free state. It also passed an amendment that drew an imaginary line across the Louisiana territory, which established a boundary between the free and slave regions; this was repealed by the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854.
After the Senate and Congress passed two different bills, a compromise bill was written with two provisions: Missouri was admitted as a slave state and Maine (formerly part of Massachusetts) as free, two, every state, with the exception of Missouri, slavery was to be excluded from the Louisiana Purchase lands north of 36', 30'.
