Date: July 4, 1776
At the Second Continental Congress Thomas Jefferson was in charge of drafting a formal statement justifying the 13 Colonies' break from Great Britain. He received lots of support on this idea from many of those at the Second Continental Congress. After Congress edited and redrafted part of this declaration, they officially adopted it on July 4, 1776.
