The main causes of WWI included nationalism, imperialism, militarism, and alliances. The event that sparked the war however was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. The alliance system forced Germany to act and so they declared war on Russia and France, and then Britain declared war on Austria-Hungry and Germany when it invaded Belgium. However, The United States only entered the war in April, 1917 after German U-boats sank the Lusitania and the Sussex(had American civilians), and tried to get Mexico to attack the U.S. with the Zimmerman telegram.
