jan 1, 1945 - Post-War Decolonization

Description:

Reasons for decolonization:
○Countries fought alongside colonies in WW2
○Britain, France and Japan weakened economically by WW2

Often involved violence, like in India where Muslim minority splits from Hindu majority and forms West Pakistan and East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) (partition of India, 1947). Violent partition with 12 million displaced. Many left their home unwillingly, and 1/2 a million killed.

Indonesia: Dutch and British try to hold on to colony, but Indonesia won its independence in 1950

French colonies in Indochina: In Cambodia, 21% of population massacred (1975-1979)

In Africa, freedom is finally free but is too used to being dependent on another nations economy+ govt, and therefore struggles to thrive. However, has seen impressive progress since.

Many new states influenced in their govt. by cold war (see cold war for rest of impact)
