Johnny met Amber at one of the auditions for The Rum Diary.

Pre-production started December 6, 2008.

Date of audition to be confirmed.

The first auditions for the role of Chenault took place whilst Amber was filming The Joneses which would have been October 2008. However it is known that Bruce Robinson auditioned several ladies for the part and although he created a short list he could not make a decision. It was at this later stage that Johnny Depp was called in (probably after he had completed Alice In Wonderland) and it was he who ultimately made the decision to cast Amber Heard.

This final decision was also possibly not taken until January or February 2009 which would allow Amber the time to canvas for the role as she has described in numerous interviews. This also would coincide with the contract being agreed and subsequent press announcements.
