Description:

The first satellite to touch the moon's surface was the Luna 2, In September of 1959. The sixth in the Soviet Union's Luna Programme. The purpose of this was to detect for radiation and lunar magnetic fields around the moon. The soviets found that around the moon there was an increase in the ion particle flux at 8000km, suggesting an ionosphere.
