The life of heavy metal icon Lemmy Kilmister was celebrated Monday night, with help from actor and rocker Johnny Depp, Aerosmith’s Joe Perry and Alice Cooper, among others.
Kilmister died on December 28, 2015, just two days after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. He was 70. Motörhead was nominated for Best Metal Performance in 1992 and 2015, and they won the Grammy in 2005 for “Whiplash.”
Dave Grohl gave a sweet introduction by honoring Kilmister saying, “Many of us play rock ‘n’ roll, but a rare few among us are rock ‘n’ roll, Lemmy Kilmister was rock ‘n’ roll. He was a rebel, an outsider, one of a kind and a way of life. He was Motörhead. He was a legend and I was proud to call him my friend.”
“I have an ace of spades tattoo,” he continued,” but the truth is Lemmy and Motörhead left their mark on me a long, long time ago. Just as they did for everybody who’s ever loved rock ‘n’ roll. As Lemmy taught us in the song ‘Ace of Spades,’ the pleasure is to play, so tonight I want to thank Lemmy and the late Phil ‘filthy’ Animal Taylor for their music and everything it meant for Motörhead.”
Depp, Perry and Cooper, better known together as the Hollywood Vampires, took to the Grammy stage to perform their own song, “As Bad As I Am.” Then, they finished up their act with a rendition of Motörhead’s “Ace of Spades.”
Before the performance, Cooper told Ryan Seacrest, “Lemmy was sort of the salt of the Earth, everybody in the whole rock ‘n’ roll world knew who Lemmy was and he was one of the guys. He drank himself right out.”
Kilmister’s son Paul Inder talked with reporters backstage, praising the band’s performance. “I thought it was great to respect my family in that way,” he said. “He would have been proud of that, so that was very moving, very touching.”
