sep 26, 1891 - Dawes Act

Description:

This act was signed into law under Grover Cleveland. It was an attempt to assimilate Native Americans into American culture and to dissolve tribes as legal entities. It wiped out tribal ownership of land and set up individual families with 160 free acres of land. It also allowed them to become American citizens after 25 years. The Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania was organized to "Kill the Indian, Save the Man" for Native American children.
