aug 25, 1995 - Maurice Benayoun, The Tunnel Under the Atlantic

Description:

In 1995, Maurice Benayoun created “The Tunnel Under the Atlantic” a tele virtual event (as the artist called it) that linked the Pompidou center (Paris) and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montréal.
The Tunnel enabled hundreds of people from both sides to meet. From each side, a two-meter-diameter tube, created the illusion that the two places were physically linked. In order to meet, both side had to virtually dig through digital images, symbols, iconographies.. like a sort of collective exploration. While digging the participants could hear each other voices, in a spatial way.. so they could realise which direction to dig to actually virtually see each other and hear each other perfectly.
