Even though the term “telepresence” was coined by Marvin Minsky in 1980 in reference to teleoperation systems for manipulating remote physical objects,the term has been used widely to define the use of multimedia to create a sense of physical presence at remote location.
In one of their essays, Witmer and Singer defined Telepresence as:
“the subjective experience of being in one place or environment, even when one is physically situated in another”
