On May 14. 1607, a group of around 100 members of a joint venture called the Virginia Company founded the first permanent English settlement in North America on the bank of the James River. Disease, famine and conflicts between Native American tribes nearly brought the town on the brink of failure. Then, in 1610, a new group of settlers and supplies arrived .
