jan 1, 1951 - 1951 Māori Women’s Welfare League

Description:

Formed in 1950, the National Māori Women’s Welfare League was established as a forum to support the social and cultural impact of Māori families leaving their papa kāinga to move to the cities for employment. Led by the founding member Dame Whina Cooper, the league was the first movement that drew on collectively advocating for the welfare of Māori. The influence of the league eventually attributed to members becoming involved with Māori arts and crafts, and Māori language retention.

In the 1960s, Rangimārie Hetet and Diggeress Te Kanawa were asked to join to share their knowledge of traditional arts in Raranga. This became the catalyst which soon saw leaders such as Te Aue Davis, Emily Schuster and Waana Davis carry out for the next few decades teaching a new generation of weavers
