mar 11, 1972 - 1972 Polynesian Festival – Whakarewarewa, Rotorua

Description:

By the 1970s, there was a cultural resurgence in expression and promotion of Māori Art. Kapa Haka was the format in which Māori were able to reconnect with marae and create cultural groups to bring through stories from their regions to life.

The Polynesian Festival was the first of its kind bringing regions in to compete. The Festival’s aims were to raise the awareness and push the importance of the retention of te reo Māori.

This is now what is known as the largest Māori Arts festival, Te Matatini National Kapa Haka Festival.
