jul 28, 1914 - WORLD WAR I (28 Jul 1914 - 11 Nov 1918)
Description:
Te Puea Hērangi was one of the many leaders who believed that Māori should not fight in the ‘Pākehā’ war and could see the devastating impact of colonial occupation through the massive land confiscations that only occured some 40 years earlier.
Despite concerns and opposition to Māori particpating in ‘Pākehā’ war by leaders at that time, a contingent left for Egypt known as Te Hokowhitu a Tū in 1915, a year after the War had begun.
