July 21, 1861: The First Battle of Bull Run took place near Manassas Junction, Virginia. 35,000 Union troops tried to strike a Confederate force of 20,000 soldiers next to a small river called Bull Run. The Confederates won, sending the Union troops into a chaotic retreat. This was a terrible battle for those in the North because they had realized the war wouldn't be as easy to end as they thought it would. The war would go on for a long time.
