The Berlin wall was a physical barrier that separated West Berlin from East Berlin but was a metaphorical barrier that separated communism of the east and democracy in the west. It was originally only barbed wire and cinder blocks but was later upgraded to a15-foot concrete wall with barbed wire with watchtowers and mines. It blocked off people escaping from the eastern sphere of influence into the western sphere of influence. The Berlin wall became a symbol of the division of the east and west in the Cold War, so as a result, after the Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989, the USSR and the communist states fell apart very soon after.Why was the Berlin Wall such a strong symbol?
