On February 6, 1862 a huge battle for the Union was fought Tennessee. General Ulysses S. Grant and Commodore Andrew Foote attacked Fort Henry that was only lightly defended. Taking a majority of the confederacy’s troops, they had to retreat claiming the Union victorious. This battle helped the Union in capturing the two major waterways later on and keeping them under their control.
