jan 1, 455 - Rome is sacked by the Vandals
Description:
Some say this marked the end of the Roman Empire. The Vandals were a Germanic tribal group who carried a raid in Rome. This raid was triggered by the assassination of the Roman Emperor Valentinian III who had previously pledged his daughter to marry the Vandal King. During this raid, the Romans were powerless. They decided to send Pope Leo I to negotiate with the Vandals because he was their only source of power. They made a deal that they would have a "clean" sacking, so the Vandals looted the patrician homes and palaces. They refrained from destroying buildings or killing anyone.
