As more free black people moved into cities looking for work, the white people in those cities began to resent them. Cities were typically republican, but many white people in them were not. Most riots ensued after white democrats incited violence at Republican political rallies. The victims were mostly black. Largest riots in Memphis (May 1) and New Orleans (Jul 30).Added to timeline:
