jan 1, 1866 - Red Cloud's War
Description:
The U.S. government tried to make a treaty with chief Red Cloud to allow U.S. emigrants to go through Indian territory. Red Cloud refused the offer, but the U.S. ignored his rulings, building 3 forts on Native American territory, Phil Kearny, C.F. Smith, and Laramie. Natives attacked first a Kearny when US Captain William Fetterman and his men were killed and reinforcements were brought in. Several other battles ensued, and fighting stopped in April 1868 when General Sherman was able to strike a deal with Red Cloud.
