jun 27, 1821 - Cotton and the South: The Cotton Gin

Description:

Before the invention of the cotton gin, tobacco was the primary cash crop of the south. The cotton gin allowed for less labor intensive production of cotton which increased its profitability. Most of the southerners invested capital in slaves, and in buying land in the western states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Arkansas. Their trade was most profitable with Britain.
