oct 21, 1800 - Revolution of 1800
Description:
Due to the scandals and high taxes of the Adams Administration, the Federalist party fell out of favor, and when it came time for Adams’s reelection bid in 1800, he and several Federalist leaders were voted out and replaced with Democratic-Republican leadership—a shift known as the Revolution of 1800. This transition between parties was peaceful. The Federalists bowed out of power with grace and without violence. At the time, this was unprecedented and renewed hopes in the longevity of the country’s governmental systems. In the election of 1800 where this transition took place, Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr, the two main contenders for president, were tied at the electoral level. Therefore, the tie-breaker was the House of Representatives, which was still Federalist-dominated at the time. Partly due to Hamilton’s influence, the House of Representatives gave their votes to Thomas Jefferson. Both houses of Congress held a Democratic-Republican majority by 1801.
