nov 1, 1791 - Political Parties
Description:
Although Washington was not affiliated with any political parties at the time of his election, during his presidency, these started to form and his fellow politicians fell in their ranks. Delineated somewhat by the original conflict between Federalists and Anti-Federalists, two distinct parties solidified in the American political scene: the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans, respectively. There were several key differences between them—mainly the fact that Federalists held a majority in Northern states while the Democratic-Republicans held a majority in the Southern states and the West, and that Federalists supported a strong central government while Democratic-Republicans supported states’ rights over those of the federal government.
