After the United States declared their neutrality regarding the French Revolution, the French minister to the United States, Edmond Genet, tried to convince the American people to support the French Revolution in violation of diplomatic rules. Citizen Genet, as he came to be known, was recalled by the French government at the American government’s request, but remained living in the United States as a civilian the rest of his life.
