apr 9, 1914 - Conflict in Mexico: Tampico Incident; Pancho Villa and the U.S. Expeditionary Force

Description:

Although Wilson supported moral diplomacy, this was not fully the case when it came to Latin American countries such as Mexico and The Caribbean. In 1913 Mexico went into a civil war and they had a military dictatorship, led by Victoriano Huerta, which made it difficult for Wilson to practice moral diplomacy and led to the Tampico Incident. He called for military troops to block the port of Vera Cruz and for supplies against the Mexican government. This created a tense relationship with Mexico and when Huerta was no longer dictating Mexico, Venustiano Carranza replaced him which created a calmer and more Democratic ruling. They fought battles against each other such as when Mexico killed many people in Texas and New Mexico, and one American troop was sent to northern Mexico, but they were not able to capture Villa. Wilson eventually brought his troops back because he was scared of the possibility of entering a World War.
