jan 1, 1931 - Scottsboro Nine
Description:
Two white women who later recanted, accused 9 black men of sexually assaulting them on a train. An all white jury sentenced them to death on no evidence. The Supreme Court overturned their convictions and ordered a new trial. Even though the women recanted, they were still found guilty only this time they were given life sentences and the last 4 were finally exonerated in 1950. This shows the extent of the racism in the South during the depression.
