feb 1, 1889 - The Philippine Question
Description:
In the Treaty of peace that was signed in Paris, America's acquisition over the Philippines for the price of $20 million to Spain was stated as a part of the treaty. However, since the Philippines is such a large island many Americans were not prepared to take over this land. Opinions towards the annexation of Philippines became very divided as some had an imperialistic mindset and others were not in favor of this action. The anti-imperialists stated that The United States was not equipped to take over this land since the inhabitants practice a completely different culture and were of a different race which in their opinion violated the Declaration of Independence. They also thought that it would cause political problems with Asia. The treaty of Paris however was approved on February 6, 1899, as the imperialists were only two votes away from the treaty being defeated. The Filipinos were infuriated since they wanted to gain independence and the nationalist leader, Emilio Aguinaldo, declared war against the United States which was fought for three years, until 1902.
