oct 13, 1788 - The Second Great Awakening: Burned over District

Description:

Another preacher that had influenced the Second Great Awakening was Presbytarian minister Charles G. Finney of upstate New York. He preached to the New Englanders that settled there, and appealed to their emotions and fear of damnation. His words influenced thousands of people to publicly declare their revived faith, as they encouraged the middle class to save themselves from 'damnation' through faith and hard work. Finney’s influence over upstate New York had dubbed the western region of the state as the “burned over district”, as his revivals were characterized by the “hell-and-brimstone” method that seemed to had lit up New England with a spiritual fervor, its influence causing the movement to stay alive for another 50 more years.
