jan 1, 1817 - American Colonization Society
Description:
The American Colonization Society attempted to move freed African slaves to an African colony for the first time in 1817. This was suggested as a first step toward ending slavery. This approach was seen as a middle ground between anti-slavery activists and pro-slavery advocates. Racist whites loved this because they desired to exclude free African-Americans from society. In 1822, The American Colonization Society (ACS) had established an Arican-American settlement in Monrovia, Liberia. This course of action would be deemed impractical, because by 1860 only 12,000 free slaves had migrated to Africa, while in the states the slave population would increase by 2.5 million. This organization was significant because it supported sending freed blacks to a colony in Africa in order to avoid racist acts by the whites. However this colonization was not a great choice and did not work for long.
