jan 1, 1830 - Horace Mann and Public Education

Description:

The need for established free public schools for children of all classes was another reform movement that started in the Jacksonian era was Public Education. Horace Mann was the leading advocate of the common public school movement. He argued that the United States should educate everyone fairly and allow the opportunity by arguing that the growth of the nation would depend on it. In 1838, he founded the Common School Journal, a biweekly publication for teachers, and he lectured widely to interested groups of people. In addition to literacy education, Mann and other educational reformers wanted these children to get a sense of other subjects as well; they wanted them to learn about moral principles. They want these children to learn about mortality because behaviors like hard work, punctuality, and sobriety were necessary for an emerging industrial society. Mann was significant during this time period because he is not only the reason we are in school today, but he also supported bringing together kids of all ages in a similar atmosphere of interaction to develop a shared learning experience.
