Description:

An unexpected power surge took place after the tests had officially started. An operator sees the problem and pushes the emergency shut down button but the control rods got all jammed up as they entered the core. 54 seconds after the power surge the first explosion takes place closely followed by one more. It blows the 1,000-ton roof off and the walls and equipment of Reactor No. 4 crumble; causing radiation, dust, and graphite to release into the atmosphere. Fires start to arise everywhere, including one on top of a nearby reactor.
