jan 1, 1863 - Keeping the Borders States in the Union: Border States (POL)(NAT)

Description:

During the Civil War, several states along the Union border came to play an important role during the war. Missouri, Kentucky, Delaware, Maryland, and West Virginia, which was formed after a portion called Virginia, seceded to the Confederacy, all stayed loyal to the Union because of exorbitant costs of going into the confederacy. Although some of these states had reservations about a war against neighboring southern states, Abraham Lincoln’s effective negotiating skills as well as the institution of martial law on the states proved his ability to maintain poise and exert influence during the war. Had these states joined the Confederacy, they would have gained a massive economic boost along with many warm bodies, factories, and infrastructure, and perhaps it could’ve swayed the outcome of the war.
