jan 1, 1865 - Thirteenth Amendment/Abraham Africanus (POL)(NAT)
Description:
The Thirteenth Amendment of the United States stated that all citizens would be given equal rights, at least in theory. In reality, native peoples and African American women and men were excluded from this act. It would however lay the groundwork for future ratification of similar amendments. It was becoming ratified by the end of 1865 and therefore solidifying abolishment of slavery in the U.S., its biggest supporter, Abraham Lincoln, became subject to several attacks by his opponents. Since his Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, the idea of abolishing slavery became a strong discussion between the North and the South. One of these attacks came in the shape of a satirical pamphlet that became famously known as Abraham Africanus I.
Abraham Africanus I: A depiction of Lincoln having made a pact with the devil to accomplish perpetual monarchal rule. This satirical discourse proved mostly entertaining than embarrassing to Lincoln.
