jan 1, 1861 - Union Strategy: Anaconda Plan/Scott's Great Snake (POL)

Description:

A strategic blockade plan developed by veteran-of-war General Winfield Scott to suppress the Confederate South’s economy by limiting exports of Cotton from plantations and block imports from its port cities. Further strategy would be to send Union Army forced to attack several key cities and seize control of trade along the Mississippi River. The “Great Snake” or “Anaconda Plan” in essence would squeeze like a snake to accomplish total suffocation or collapse of the Confederate economy. Thus, causing hardship to thousands in the South and provoke desertion of the Confederacy.

Scott’s Great Snake: the primary source depicts a large snake surrounding the Confederate states on all sides, slowly suffocating and killing it. the cartoon is meant to be an analogy for the Anaconda plan.
