jan 1, 1890 - Billion-dollar Congress: Sherman Silver Purchase Act

Description:

The next 2 years after 1888 Republicans controlled both the presidency and Congress. This led to the passing of the first billion-dollar budget in US history. It started with the McKinley Tariff of 1890 which ended up raising taxes on foreign products. next there was the increased monthly pensions to ex Civil War veterans widows and children. Third there was the Sherman Antitrust Act which prevented combinations in Restraint of trade. Forrest was the Sherman Silver Purchase Act of 1890 which ultimately increased the creation of silver coins but didn't satisfy any farmers or miners. and lastly there was a bill that protected the voting rights of African-Americans that was passed by the house but ended up falling short in the Senate.
