Description:
In 1863 in the west, Union forces controlled New Orleans and most of the Mississippi river. The Union was close to claiming the Mississippi river when General Grant began his siege of vicksburg. Union artillery bombarded vicksburg for 7 weeks before the confederacy surrendered. The outcome of this was control of the Mississippi for the union and cutting off Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas from the rest of the confederacy.
