Description:

Economic- The union was mostly in control of the nations economy. They controlled 85% of factories, 70% of railroads, and 65% of farmland. Confederates relied on outside help for the war. They hoped European demand for its cotton would bfing help with aid for the war financially.

Political- The idea of states rights proved a serious liability for confederate government. However, in order for the south to win the war they would need a strong central government. The union had a well established government in Abraham Lincoln and strong politicians with a strong popular base.
