Description:

In a debate in Free port Lincoln challenged Douglas to reconcile popular sovereignty with the dred scott decision. This became known as the freeport doctrine. Although Douglas won the campaign to be reelected, Lincoln arose from the debates as a national figure and a leading candidate for the republican nomination for president in 1860.
