Magic Johnson publicly announced that he had contracted HIV in 1991. This news came at a time when HIV and AIDS were highly stigmatized. Contrary to common knowledge now, it was then believed to be a disease for only gay white men. He retired following the announcement as his physical health was in question and other players were at risk of contracting the disease if a player started bleeding.
