nov 1, 480 BC - Battle of Artemisium

Description:

Simultaneously to the land based blockade at Thermopylae, the Greeks also launched a naval blockade at Artemisium. Although the Persians set out with a fleet of roughly 1200 ships, due to several storms on their commute across the coast of Magnesia they reached the Greek force with only around 800. Either way they still outnumbered the Greeks more than 3-1 and as such, after several small skirmished in which both sides took roughly equal losses, and after news of the piercing of Thermopylae reached them, the Greeks chose to retreat their navy to Salamis.

Although this battle was a decisive Persian victory the losses they sustained to storms the Persian fleet was severely reduced in strength and morale. This would lead to their crushing naval defeat at Salamis and the eventual end of the second Persian invasion of Greece.
