jan 1, 1915 - Submarine Warfare: Lusitania crisis; Sussex pledge

Description:

World War One had different tactics of fighting then previous battles. Submarine warfare became the newest and toughest method for a blockade as there was a risk of being sunk by other countries. Germany and Britain went to war and challenged each other through submarine warfare. The British appeared super strong however the German submarines put up a fight. The threat of being sunk was the scariest as often times there was no warning meaning all those aboard would not have time to reach safety on a lifeboat. Not only naval ships fighting in the war or at threat, other ships like merchant ships that we're oftentimes unarmed were compromised such as the ship the Sussex. There were American passengers aboard this ship and after a German torpedo struck there were many deaths, but a bigger threat arose. The United States threatened to enter the war but on Britain side not Germany, which would be too powerful for Germany to handle. Therefore, Germany back down, and took an oath, Sussex Pledge, of no more surprised torpedo striking’s, preventing more losses of innocent lives in surprise attacks.
