Description:

In the 18th century, many Americans began to feel attracted to the European movement of literature and philosophy known as the Enlightenment. The leaders of this movement believed that the darkness of the past can be solved by using reason and solving most of the world's problems. John Locke, was a 17th century enlightenment thinker wrote Two Treatises of Government which reasoned that while the state of the government was supreme it was bound to follow natural laws based on human rights. He also said that citizens had the right to revolt against any government that failed to protect their rights.
