oct 1, 1730 - Great Awakening: Religious Impact(CUL, NAT)

Description:

Sermons in the 18th centuries carried out by Protestant churches were usually long and addressed god as the benig creator of a perfectly ordered universe. They did not focus as much on human sinfulness and the perils of damnation than in the Puritan times. This all changed when a hurricane swept through colonies destroying many things in its path, many people had a sudden surge of religious feeling which was called the Great Awakening. Jonathan Edwards expressed Great Awakening ideas in a church in Northampton. He argued that god was angry with human sinfulness. George Whitefield spread the Great Awakening throughout the colonies attracting large masses of people, where he argued that God would only forgive those who confessed. This movement affected all areas of life, this also included politics. This was the first time that all Americans experienced something together, regardless of social class or race. They also had a sense of democracy which would challenge the authority of a king and his royal governors.
