jan 1, 1835 - Antislavery Movement: Abolitionism; William Lloyd Garrison, The Liberator; Liberty Party; Frederick Douglass, The North Star:
Description:
In 1831, William Lloyd Garrison began the publication of an abolitionist newspaper known as The Liberator, this is an event that marks the beginning of the radical abolitionist movement. He founded the American Antislavery Society in 1833 and Garrison declared the Constitution should be burned because it is a proslavery document. This radicalism soon led to a split in his movement. Believing politics will help their cause the most, the Liberator party was formed, and their only pledge was to abolish slavery by using political and legal means. One former slave, Frederick Douglas, talked about the brutality and degradation of slavery from a firsthand experience. In 1847, Douglass started the antislavery journal titled “The North Star”.
