jan 1, 1676 - Conflict in Virgina: Bacon’s Rebellion(POL, WXT)
Description:
Sir William Barkeley was the royal governor on behalf of large planters. He failed to protect small farmers against attacks and that caused a large amount of resentment towards him by poor farmers. This injustice caused a rebellion against Barkeley’s government. Nathaniel Bacon raised an army of volunteers to fight and raid American Indian Villages on the Virgina frontier. This caused Barkeley to accuse him of being against the royal authority, but Bacon was able to defeat the governor’s forces and burn down JamesTown, this ended when Bacon died and Barkeley executed 23 rebels. Two main issues were brought light with these rebellions, the fact that colonists were rebelling against the king and there was a large divide between the wealthy and the poor.
