jan 1, 1607 - Labor Shortages: Indentured Servant, Hearight System, Slavery(WXT,CUL,NAT)

Description:

Due to a limmited amount of laborers in the colonies different forms of labor systems began to be established. Many land owners, primarily in the South resulted in using other people to harvest their crops and tend to farms. Indentured servitude became one of the first established forms of labor in the colonies, this labor system consisted of a formal agreement of people in Britain to come to America to work for a specified amount of time, after they fulfilled this time they were free to do as they wished. The large problem with this system is that it was only temporary and the wages to these people were very expensive in comparison to other forms of labor. The Headright system was established for any immigrant to come over for 50 acres of land if they paid for their own passage and also for plantation owners who paid for an immigrant’s passage. Finally, slavery was also used in the Colonies. Many African laborers were transported to the US where there were laws that discriminated against African Americans which caused these people to be treated as property and were forced to spend their whole lives working for a plantation owner.
