jan 1, 1595 - Jamestown (MIG, WXT)
Description:
Jamestown was the the first English colony in the Americas and it came with a large deal of difficulties before it could be profitable. The first inhabitants of Jamestown were not equipped for large amounts of labor and most or their interests did not translate well in the transition to the United States and what was required of them. Their first years were dependent on deals made with the natives, but when problems and disputes began to arise settlers began to starve. With the leadership of Captain John Smith they were able to survive their first challenging years and with the help of John Rolfe and his wife Pocahauntas they were able to introduce a new form of tobacco that became popular in Europe which ended up becoming very profitable. The Virginia company ended up making fatal mistakes and the power was turned over to the king who changed the colony to Virginia.
